I’d barely disconnected the call with Nicole when the phone rang again.

Dan tapped the button on his steering wheel that allowed him to answer. “Holmes.”

“It’s Miranda. Are you alone?”

Detective Austen’s voice had an anxious edge to it. I could imagine her pacing the floor on her end of the call.

She was on leave the same as Dan, but based on her determination to stay in the loop on this case, she probably wasn’t actually staying away from the station. Maybe she’d found out something, either from the investigating detectives or because she was secretly investigating as well. She and Dan were supposed to go to the shooting range together tomorrow, so whatever she’d found out must be urgent if she hadn’t wanted to wait even one day.

Dan held a finger to his lips, indicating I should stay quiet. “I’m driving in my car.”

Answering a question without either lying or telling the truth had probably been a skill that had served him well as an undercover officer.

“I was down at the station again, and the same man showed up. The one who said he was an FBI agent.”

My neck and back felt stiff, as if I’d laid down in cement. That couldn’t be good. Jarrod already knew where Dan lived. He didn’t need to dig up that information anymore.

“He is an FBI agent,” was all Dan said.

“I know.” Her voice sounded even more agitated. “Labreck was the one who listened to his complaint, and he wasn’t as careful about kicking me out as the detectives sent in for Zee’s case.”

Her voice broke slightly on Zee’s name, but she finished the sentence. I’d never liked Detective Austen, but seeing her struggle like this made me pity her. Zee had been Dan’s friend, but he’d been Detective Austen’s boyfriend. She might have been imagining a life with him, maybe even marriage and kids. Now her days were never going to look the same.

I gave myself a little shake. Proving our theory that Jarrod killed Zee would give her closure, too. I had to stay focused on what trick Jarrod might be up to in order to stop us.

“Dan,” Detective Austen’s voice slowed in tempo, as if she wanted to be sure she took him seriously, “what’s going on?”

That question was vague enough that, short of telling her everything, Dan couldn’t answer. And we were definitely not going to tell her everything. Dan wasn’t supposed to be investigating this case. The detectives in charge might overlook Detective Austen showing up at the station every day because it was something a lot of grieving family members did in the pursuit of answers and closure. But what Dan and I were doing could be considered actively interfering with the case. Dan had interviewed potential witnesses, after all.

Dan cast me a look that said don’t worry. “What do you mean?”

“He wanted to file an attempted assault charge against you. He said you drew your weapon on him and threatened him.”

I sucked in a breath, then covered my mouth with my hand.
